DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR DESIGN WEEK AWARDS

Yes, you read it right: the entry deadline for the Design Week Awards 2011 has been extended until Thursday 28th October.  Here's what Lynda Relph-Knight,  editor of DW, states about this years' awards:

Austerity engenders constraints, but, as Sir John Sorrell has famously said, it can bring out the best in designers. The creative community thrives on challenge and recession often inspires the best work, even if there is less of it.
This was borne out by the 2010 Design Week Awards, particularly in print categories where bold, black and white graphics indicated a welcome return to simple ideas beautifully crafted. Everyone loved them.
But ingenuity isn't just the province of communication design. Product and furniture sections yielded a plethora of great entries last year, pushing the boundaries of technology and form.
Good design make a huge difference for businesses in tough times through innovation and appropriateness - characteristics that win creative awards. It can come from any design studio, whatever its size or location, given the right mix of talent and confidence.
We celebrate these traits when we applaud the DW Awards winners. Through them we have highlighted new or hidden talents over the years and unwittingly helped to forge many a client/designer partnership.
It's not easy to create great work at the best of times, so design that stands above the norm deserves recognition. By entering the Design Week Awards, you are pitting yourself against the best for one of design's most prestigious annual design prizes. You are also showing belief in your team.
All awards entries are assessed by a panel of eminent judges, solely on the quality of design and execution. Aesthetics and innovation, appropriateness of form and function, the creative use of type and texture, of colour and of space are all considered.
The work of those who win or are shortlisted for a prize will be published in the Design Week Awards supplement - a collectable in its own right - and enter into the DW archive for all time. The glow that gives you will live on long after that last glass is drained on the awards night.

BRIGHTON PHOTO FRINGE: CLOSER

Stuart Griffiths, exhibiting 'Closer', started photography as a young soldier whilst patrolling west Belfast in the late 80s.  The exhibition, in it's entirety, attempts to question the heroic notion and harsh reality of what it means to enlist to serve ones country, and what remains for veterans at the end of this dangerous and altruistic act.  I say that the question raised is one typical of any soldier.  Having been brought up in rural N.I. these particular images alone meant nothing to me, but what was of interest wasn't the photos, but the collection of the soldiers' letters displayed:  shown alongside the photographs, which act as a catalyst, they allow the thoughts of the soldiers, and more importantly the memories of the Troubles, to become a reality once again.
Until 14th November 2010.

BRIGHTON PHOTO BIENNIAL #3

VIVIANE SASSEN

With a reputation as a fashion photographer, it's not a surprise that Sassen started on a body of collaborative portraits which concentrate on more meaningful photography.  Embarking on trips back and forth to Africa since 2001, the above are samples of what's been achieved.

BRIGHTON PHOTO BIENNIAL #2

WOUT BERGER

Dutch photographer Wout Bergers' most recent works were taken in a neighbourhood just outside Amsterdam; a village called Ruigoord which has a longstanding reputation as an artistic oasis.  Through these photos, Berger typically draws on the tension between form and content, real and artificial nature.  The impressionistic qualities within these photos are stunning, displaying a painterly beauty that is rarely seen in the medium, but they also pull in an essence of crispness, only ever seen within printed textiles.  They are photos that inspire print on fabric.

BRIGHTON PHOTO BIENNIAL #1

SUZANNE OPTON

These portraits from the exhibition 'New Ways of Seeing', are of war veterans and soldiers involved in past and current wars.  The head portraits, taken from the iconic project 'Soldier', have been presented as billboards across eight American cities. The project itself has sparked off a lively debate on issues involving art and soldiering.  For more information click on the link.

CARDIFF DESIGN FESTIVAL 2010

Cardiff has taken up the design festival baton from London, with the launch of the 6th Cardiff Design Festival running until the 16th October.  It showcases the best of Welsh design, ensuring that their skills are recognised by the public as well as businesses from the UK and beyond.  In short it is a celebration of the Welsh design community and illustrates how the design sector affects every part of our lives whether we know it or not ... from the cereal boxes choose to eat from in the morning, right through to the beds we sleep in at night.
